They have someone on horseback riding away from the tower in the very first scene, which I think is safe to assume is Elphaba escaping, so I'm sure she'll survive just like the stage show
Must be.

She escapes with Fiyero in the stage production, and he's the only one we see on horseback through the first part

I would very much be in favour of a non musical adaptation of all of the books, which would be quite a lot darker and would probably have to be a TV series.

I *hated* the ending of the musical. I get that the alternative would probably be too downbeat for a fluffy family-friendly show, but it made me genuinely angry when I saw it in London years ago (with Idina :disco: ) as it just felt like it undercut the whole story.

I mean I get why. And I know the musical is already too long to really drag out the connection to The Wizard Of Oz effectively. But it just makes the last ten minutes always feel very "shit, we've got ten minutes left, let's wrap this up".

The musical is so wildly different to the book anyway, I really don't mind the change to the ending. Even though everyone lives, everyone has been changed FOR GOOD :eyes:

Whether that means for the better, or just forever, is left open.

Spotted this too, but…

We see the Scarecrow walking back down the yellow brick road with Dorothy and co, so the timeline mustn’t be exactly the same as the musical at least, where they escape together.

Of course a part of me would really enjoy if they made it truly canonical to the Wizard of Oz movie by having the whole world collapse on itself when Dorothy clicks her heels together, but I think I’d enjoy the widespread outrage more than that as an actual ending.

You're right, and we discussed that in the pub post-mortem yesterday too :D

That's quite a big change tonally if they go with that for Part 2.

This is still doing monster numbers, even with Moana 2 coming in huge. Ended up being one of the biggest Thanksgiving weekends ever in the US.

Moana didn’t steal all the box office thunder though, as there was still plenty of room left for Wicked. The musical nailed down $80 million from Friday through Sunday – down just 29% from its opening weekend – and an amazing $117.5 million for the five-day weekend. The film is now the top-grossing adaptation of a Broadway musical of all-time at $262.4 million, passing Grease’s $188.6 million domestic take. And even if you’re someone who adheres the “inflation-adjusted caveat,” it’s not far from that either with only Chicago higher at an inflation-adjusted $305.8 million.

Wicked’s success is massive at this point with a worldwide total of $359.3 million against a $150 million budget plus marketing. With the film holding on well, expect this one to top $400 million domestically and probably higher than that.

I must have fallen asleep at some point on my first viewing because on the second viewing I saw bits I don't remember in the first. :D

I forget the song but I did enjoy the throwback to his work in In the Heights with the nail-orgraphy.

Approx. 1:40 in.

I really hate how Dinklage pronounces ‘paws’ as POZ

And let’s be honest, any passerby on the street could give a better opening speech than Michelle Yeoh

She’s better later on but it’s a 5.5/10 PERF at best

She was probably the biggest disappointment. She was great in the final scene, so maybe she'll come into her own in the second part.

Jeff Goldblum did a great job of making the wizard quite ambiguous and I would have liked a bit more of that from her.

I don’t really know. I haven’t kept up on much of news about the show for a long long time. Only about 25% of my show counts have been in the last 10 years.

OK FINE I listened to Cynthia’s The Wizard & I earlier with a more critical ear and while I personally still LOVE IT, I suppose I can gracefully concede she doesn’t have the kind of bright tone that probably suits the song more

Her I’m Not That Girl is perfect however

And No Good Deed is going to be LIFE-CHANGING 🫨

Cynthia is amazing singer, she’s just too polished. Her tender moments where her technique is put to use are exquisite. But it lacks a bit when she needs the grit because her voice just doesn’t seem to have the depth - not depth of ability, depth of sound.

It’s possible that she sung the songs exactly the way Chu wanted her to, of course.

I don't think she's an amazing singer at all. Very good for sure, hits the notes perfectly, but I don't get any real FEELING.

No Good Deed should be fantastic in any case. I hope it isn't peppered with flashbacks to Tween Elphaba though.
