Old TOTP (BBC4) (1 Viewer)

Looking back at the charts from the time, I note that Since Yesterday charted for over 20 weeks, which was pretty decent back then.

So Russ Abbott. I have seen this before and it's really hard to have a constructive opinion on. I guess in the world of Black Lace this is relatively tolerable.

How did this come into being?

I hope I never see or hear “Say Yeah” by The Limit again.

I think that's more due to the amount of time it took to break the single, rather than it having a particularly impressive chart run, though.

I thought that was Haywoode on that The Limit song. Clearly the star of that particular show.

Amii Stewart's dancing was much more notable than Friends.

I'd pretty much forgotten that Amii Stewart single. I do rather like it, though.

I never realised (or had forgotten I did know, it's quite possible) that she is Sinitta's step aunt.

I must say that Amii's 'Friends' is one of my secret JOYS, THEN as NOW

I won't think it OVER AGAIN

Haywoode was doing the miming on 'Say Yeah' but the vocals on the record are by the late, great, Gwen Guthrie.

On to Thursday 24 January 1985 and a Mike Smith and Steve Wright hosted edition of Top Of The Pops which means of course that it won't be shown on BBC4. Bad news again for Strawberry Switchblade as both their performances on Top Of The Pops were on a Mike Smith hosted edition though we did see a snippet of them last week in the top 10 countdown.

Did M-Beat sample that Police Officer song on Incredible?
Of course I meant On A Ragga Tip! :manson:

I thought Russ Abbott's Atmosphere was a much earlier hit than 1985, I guess it was in the wake of Agadoo. That video :D he looked like a dad at a party, wrestling his way through the crowd shouting "I've come to pick my daughter up!"

Best episode for a while. Chaka live :disco:

STILL agog every time I see I Know Him So Well. The state of Barbara Dickson, the high end 80s fashion and the fake ABBAy of it all.

Ooh the second best song called 'Thinking Of You' in the world ever

Do we know the long term goal because we’re moving through them at a rapid pace?!

Will 86 start the second half of the year?

Need to catch up with these...a lot of Twitter activity re. Art of Noise...

They normally do two years in a year. Which means Xmas fun in June.

1985 has been kinda weird so far. Loving a lot of it, but am reminded that Jan used to be the weird time of year for music.

I wonder how long they'll continue...at what point does BBC Four's audience stop caring?

I'd imagine they'll at least finish the 80s.

Sad to see how many are dead from this era of the chart - Pete Burns, George, Prince, Bowie, Kirsty MacColl and soon to be Whitney.

That Art of Noise track making the top 10 was quite the feat! I think it's shite but I like how diverse these charts are.

I think they will keep going until the end. People will remain nostalgic for it.

It was quite the curio. I expect it was probably more influential than it was actually good. I didn't actually hate it, it was certainly interesting.

"Close (To The Edit)" was a gamechanger. I still love it and actually have my 7" picture disc of it pinned up on my wall, just to the left hand side of when I sit at my PC.

I'll take the odd bit of shite when the payoff is more diversity. And it's not like we don't get a lot of shite now. It's just that now it's more of the same shite, rather than total WHAT THE FUCK? shite.

I knew nothing of Art of Noise. As a group they were less significant than the sum of their parts. Rent a gob Paul Morley, Trevor Horn and the female of the group Anne Dudley went on to much greater successes, including an Oscar win.

I only knew of them for the Tom Jones version of Kiss.

I'd definitely take what the fuck shite over actual shite like Drake and Post Malone.

I really wish I had more time at the moment for old TOTP. It used to be a real treat when it was one a week on a Thursday but I just don't have the time for DOUBLE HELPINGS or whatever it is now. This is my ERA, man :(

Morley and Horn contributed very little - Morley only provided some titles and the sleevenotes. Gary Langan had a good career as a producer and engineer before and after; in fact, he left after the 2nd album because he was too busy.

Ah. I was basing my knowledge on wiki, but I guess there were a 'project' rather than a traditional group.

Jeczalik and Langan were Trevor Horn's engineer and programmer of choice. They were working on some of the new sampling technology while making a Yes album - the drums on the first AON album are actually by Yes's drummer at the time, Alan White. Horn had just formed ZTT and needed a band. So serious work began and Anne Dudley was called in because she was also one of Horn's go-to people. But Horn didn't really do much. They became a "band" after leaving ZTT and going down to the trio that did 98% of the work.

I see the 1980s going looking quite good fashion wise to the era of satin shirts and very bad hair.
