Old TOTP (BBC4) (2 Viewers)

Nope - I don't remember The Limit at all...I mean, the song is shit and totally bland but I can remember worse and more bland from the same era...

"She's beautiful as well" - ugh, fuck off Gary Davies you creep.

God, giving out a postal address for voting in the Brits...I wonder how many votes they'd get if they did it that way now.

Something tells me Big Sound Authority were something to do with Paul Weller...certain sound like a knock-off Style Council.

I kinda loved it, for being quite different and a bit of an entry into the late 1980s.

I was - and still am - a massive fan of that era of Art Of Noise and the one immediately after was decent too. But they looked like parents at a school disco.

Terry Hall must have been quite the cunt - this is his third band in about 4 years.

Kirsty MacColl...funny how she gave Billy Bragg his first hit when Bragg couldn't get played outside Peel.

I can remember a worrying amount of the lyrics to "I Know Him So Well"...

The lead singer of The Killing Joke is TWENTY FOUR in this clip.

This is actually a lot better than I remember. But yeah, Jaz Coleman looks like a feral twin who's just escaped from the basement, slaughtered his family and taken over the dead twin's identity.

Last week I forgot to post the link to the edition from 28/02/85... as it's another Mike Smith edition we won't be seeing it on BBC4

https://wetransfer.com/downloads/6ffdd405df798d1f8d58cdca583d537c20180202193554/ff27ec

The file expires in less than 24 hours so grab it while you can!

Once again it's not the best of editions due to the stop / start nature of TOTP from this era where it's mainly videos with a handful of "live" appearances along with the Breakers and then the Top 40 countdown:

28/02/85 (Peter Powell & Mike Smith)
Dead Or Alive – “You Spin Me Round (Like A Record)” (2)
Prince – “Let’s Go Crazy” (9) (video)

If you are reading this after 8pm on Friday 9 February there is a second chance to download the programme but the download is almost three times the size (958 MB compared to 326MB) but that link will expire in a couple of days https://wetransfer.com/downloads/296f5bf1d14eee830da53a7e06ae2ea620180203235215/4105fc

The edition shown on BBC4 tonight (Thursday) is from 7 March 1985. The next edition, which will be shown tomorrow, is from 4 April 1985. Two editions (14/03/85 and 28/03/85) feature Mike Smith and the edition from 21/03/85 won't be shown due to "technical difficulties". I assume the edition is not of broadcast quality. Two performances from the 21/03/85 edition were featured on the Hits Of 1985 programme on BBC4 in January and both performances looked like they were taken from a VHS copy of that particular edition.

I've had to give it up. The quality is just too poor. Which is a shame cos Madonna, Dead or Alive and Stephen Duffy :disco:

I've moved on to the latest BBC4 episode. I have decided the lead singer of Go West is a twat.

I'm watching, but what a horrible copy!
Yup, the copy is dreadful, possibly the worst that has been uploaded so far in all the years the TOTP repeats have been shown. The guy who uploaded it did say it was a copy of a copy of a copy...

Literally AGOG at that Shakin Stevens performance!

The epileptic dancing!
The weird stiff jacket!
The legs akimbo shot!

I met him at a Kim Wilde after party once. He was a complete wanker. And his girlfriend (of the time or still the case, I cannot say) introduced herself to me as "Peter from Go West's girlfriend" and promptly dumped me when she realised I wasn't in "the industry".

Rick Astley was there too and he was utterly delightful, however. Just so you know...

And up pops the 21 March 1985 edition...

and that's all the episodes of Top Of The Pops that BBC4 haven't shown so far this year.

In the latest in the series of HOW OLD?!

Phil Collins was 34 when Easy Lover was released.

THIRTY FOUR.

I suppose being a TORY CUNT ages you.

Oh God the Easy Lover video is so annoying. Thank God we've missed half it's time at the top.

It was truly bizarre. Shaky spreading his legs for the nation was something I never imagined seeing.

I wasn't aware there was such an attempt to give him a contemporary sound either.

He'd acquired a new producer by this point - Peter Collins who was a partner in a production company with Pete Waterman. Collins was Nik Kershaw's producer and had previously produced all of Musical Youth's singles as well as a whole host of other acts going back to the mid 70s. After working with Shaky, Collins changed direction, split the partnership with Waterman and moved into producing rock acts. He produced the next two Rush albums before moving on to acts such as Queensryche (he produced the excellent 'Silent Lucidity') and Bon Jovi ('Always' being one of the biggest selling singles he produced in the 1990s).

I don't hate that Billy Bragg song. The diversity of music in the charts in 1985 is quite high, especially compared to now. Hair rock, protest songs, Hi-NRG, classical, RnB...

Sarah Brightman looks like she's just glazed her lips in fresh spunk.

Sarah Brightman paedo scandal with Paul Miles Kingston?

"Between The Wars" is a great song. First-state Billy Bragg (up to an including "Don't Try This At Home") is awash with many a gem. After a lay-off for health reasons he began to repeat himself a bit before doing the collaboration with Wilco, after which he settled into a role of political elder statesman that seems to have suited everyone.
