UK Charts/ Midweeks 2019

I'll be happy if she hits #1 next week. But its a
The only chart which mattered had been DEFUNCT for several years anyway.
Are there any actual FORMER charts. Did there not used to be GAY and BLACK chart? Or something to that effect.

The US certainly had a black music chart at one point. This was largely soul, R&B and dance music. There was a minor stir when it was topped by The Art Of Noise who turned out to be three white studio boffins.

Céline is certainly holding up a lot better in the UK than she did in America

I must say I am rather fond of Shaky’s Merry Christmas Everyone. :santa:

I only found out last year that it was recorded for release in 1984 but when the label heard about Band Aid they cancelled the release and held it back until '85.

The article which puts Mariah at #7 doesn't list her sales, but from the ones it does list, it's based on the Wednesday update above. And it also lists Wham! as having sold 4.2k copies.on physical.

I'm guessing those physical sales will drop right back next week, so I'm still expecting Mariah to be the biggest Christmas song over Christmas week itself. I don't think #1 is out of reach, but I'd have hoped she would be building a bit more than she has this week for that to happen.

4200 copies feels like a lot for a supposedly "limited edition" 7" that costs a tenner but I guess it could be proving popular as a gift?

It was rather a good decision- Band Aid, Wham, Like A Virgin, Paul McCartney and The Frog Chorus, Frankie Goes to Hollywood- NO ONE STOOD A CHANCE.

(Well, Nellie the Elephant did, but I digress...)

Yeah, '84 did turn out to be something of a banner year in the Xmas charts. Although I seem to recall Tears For Fears's unfestive ode to primal screaming, "Shout" being top 10 as well.

1984 was just a banner year for the charts in general. WHAT A YEAR!

I always tend to think of the Shaky song as pre-dating Band Aid and Wham!, but I think that's because I tend to associate Shaky more with '81 and '82.

Although as anyone who has been following the TOTP reruns on BBC4 can attest, his reign of terror was staggeringly long.

I was staggered that Shaky was still having hits as far on as he did.

1984 was Duran, Madonna, Wham! (and solo George), Billy Ocean, Purple Rain, Tina Turner, HELLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, Bananarama, Chaka Khan...Chaka Khan, Chhh-Chhh-Chhaka Khan, Thompson Twins, Pointer Sisters, The only year Queen were any good, Cyndi Lauper, LET'S HEAR IT FOR THE BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOY, Bronski Beat, Alf and, of course, EMERGENCY! PAGING DR BEAT! EMERGENCY!

And THAT'S just off the top of my HAIRDO.

It was the first year I was properly obsessed by music, so I remember it all SO SO well. With the obvious exception of the disco glory years, it really is one of the years that produced my favourite music- that and 1989 I have in my head for some reason...

I’ve thrown on a 1984 playlist on Spotify after reading this- I forgot SELF CONTROL and Hazell Dean from my list and I’ve only just GOT GOING :disco:

I fully expect Mariah to remain at #1 until Boxing Day now.

And hopefully once LadBaby's #1 is announced soon, its sales will start falling right back.

I'm going to predict Stormzy for #1 and Mariah #2 next week.

Xmas songs update:

#5 Wham

#17 Band Aid

I'm sure that's exactly the reason. On the main Spotify Chridtmas Hits playlist, she's lower than Ariana's version. Higher in the Spotify chart though. I think it may yet chart next week.
