You ARE saying that a lot  and her streaming has doubled (more or less, I think) since Disco. Give her a break.
Although if her streaming has increased, that must mean less actual sales.

And regarding the general decline in sales since 2020 I'm not sure the album market has declined so much from then until now has it - or at least not so much as it did at the end of the last decade. I thought it was levelling out. Indeed comparing last week to same week sales 2022, total sales were up over 15%. That's just a snapshot though - I haven't looked to see if that's typical.

that's probably because streaming is rising significantly year on year and many album sales are comprised of streaming points, no?

We can’t moan she isn’t connecting with the general public (arguable, at least PP certainly has) but then demand she drops the public‘s favourite tracks from her setlists in favour of gay interest favourites :D

No idea how the streaming market is growing individually. But in view of how (comparatively) hard it is to buy the physical product - and that we know downloads are only a small part of the market - you'd have to assume an increasing amount of album sales are from streaming. Particularly for the total market.

I absolutely LIVE for Kylie stanning BREATHE so much, wheeling it out at every possible chance (and then retiring it after 4-5 performances).

FIVE STARS ACROSS THE BOARD for last night:

That’s where I am at. I admit I also toyed with it hitting 60-75k, but I guess in reality PP has been a nice fat hit, but isn‘t going to translate to an extra 20k people buying a physical from her. Add to the overall decline in sales and the fact Disco was buoyed by a late November (and locked down) market, to be hitting these levels is impressive overall. Streaming wise, PP doesn’t count toward those figures for the album so it doesn’t even really help there.

We are still hugely above Kiss Me Once figures, and I believe Golden was a bit lower too?

I agree that Covid may have helped with Disco's sales. There was the chart battle with Little Mix as well... I'm not sure what effect that had on the minds of cooped up middle aged gays generally but I bought three copies of Disco release week I think, and I've just bought the digital deluxe this time.

Disco was also the first time she went really crazy with the formatting (I believe) as well as the first time she signed anything that didn't move. There's probably a bit of fatigue there with the core fanbase.

Speaking of the digital deluxe, I see from Wikipedia that both songs are credited to Kylie/Stannard/Blackwell/Green. Ten songs across the album from the Biffco camp (and associates in various combinations) :disco:

I just tried swapping Say Something and Dance Floor Darling (from Disco) with Hands and Green Light from Tension on Spotify playlists and it works really well in both cases.

The Little Mix battle mobilised at least internet gays, and with nowhere to go thanks to Covid and, for some, thus more disposable income no doubt helped Disco.

Overall I reckon there’s a limit to the amount an act like Kylie can sell, hence I’m not disappointed in these sales. Outside of Taylor and Olivia I don’t think a female artist has shifted this much in a long time? A quick check shows Beyoncé only did just over 30k (maybe formats weren’t released?) and Pink got 38k and that’s with two top 20 hits under her belt. So this is a strong result all things considered I’d say.

I do think Disco is getting a bad rap now that there is the shinier Tension on the scene. I can't be the only one here who still enjoys that album, surely?

I do love a bit of DISCO every now and then. Real Groove and Miss A Thing kind of serve, Supernova and Monday Blues on the other hand.

10k sold which I think is pretty good for an Aussie number one these days, no?

I think outside of the hardcore, pop up shop overnight queuing, SayHeying loons, there probably is a degree of multiple format fatigue - particularly when the majority of those formats are never going to be actually played. Those people who buy multiple vinyl or CD variants surely only play one, if they play it at all. So the rest is just STUFF hanging around the house after release week hype drops off, unless you're a loon completist. And when she's released five (I think?) different cassettes, it really does make you think this is just a load of plastic crap.

I wonder also if the sheer number of different formats puts some people off of buying multiple copies. If you know you can't afford/ just don't want ALL of them, perhaps you're more likely to think you'll make do with one or two instead - particularly if you've got multiple copies of previous albums gathering dust unplayed somewhere.

The signing business is an interesting one, because it absolutely was the reason why I bought the bundle I did when immediately I saw it released. Yet I've also got the signed Disco one shoved in a drawer somewhere, so what's the bloody point? I don't think I'll fall for it again. Or at least hope I don't. I can't remember what the last Shakespear's Sister reissue was, but I remember not buying that one, realising I really didn't need another signed print to keep underneath a pile of blankets in the spare room.

I try to think back to my ten/eleven year old self when I literally wanted EVERYTHING. Even the tiniest mention of Kylie in a magazine would have me feeling FOMO if I didn't get it. I ended up with lots of unofficial crap on top of the official stuff because I couldn't really differentiate at that age.

Anyway my point is, I wonder if I would really have wanted every version of an album, just because it came in multitude of colours. I'm really not sure I would. But then I also bought countless imports and well...aside from different sleeves, it was just more of the same.

At this point in my life I feel guilty purchasing even one physical copy because I know I will NEVER play it and we'll it's just more plastic, innit.

How are we enjoying the album, a week on? I've basically listened to nothing else all week, and I might be ready for my ratings soon :o

I don't think I bought many Kylie imports, but particularly pre-internet I think that was slightly different, because getting hold of international versions was so exciting. You'd often stumble across them in record shops without knowing they even existed, or read about them in Record Collector and it would take ages to hunt them down. And then owning them was quite a thrill! Everything felt like a special find, or something that only people on the other side of the planet owned.

Now when you have twenty formats dumped online for all the world to buy, and thanks to eBay, very few things are actually really elusive any more, that's all gone :(

I find this a bit much! "I don't think I'll fall for it again"? you haven't been conned — you made an active decision to buy a vinyl because you like collecting vinyl. I don't think it matters if it's played or not, it's a way of supporting the artist. this "victim of so many vinyl variants!!!" thing a few people on here have been peddling is kinda weird.

Oh yes, it's utterly ludicrous I agree. It's completely on me. Although I don't like collecting vinyl (if that matters) - it is about supporting the artist. I wanted the CD, for sake of completion, and I think that bundle was the cheapest way of getting the signed print at that time.

Still waiting for the bundle to arrive as it goes. Perhaps that's what has got me ruminating about it. Would I be that pissed off if I ended up getting a refund, now I've been listening to it all week? :D

I’m a moaner about this, agreed, but I don’t think I’m saying it’s a “victim” thing, but it IS a con. Kylie doesn’t need the money OR a major label. She could happily self release music forever more on her own. But they KNOW certain people will buy everything and I do think it’s unfair when mid week they chuck another format out with more on, as has happened in this case. It’s playing that loyal market and unless you’ve been a collector, you’ll never understand what that is like to try and keep up with all that.

But victim? Nah.

I gave up collecting (Madonna) stuff ages ago for exactly the reason @lolly said and i’m thinking of not bothering with Saint Etienne anymore beyond standard vinyl. And it’s a shame as that thrill he talks of was really addictive and fun! Even charity shopping for records is a dead hobby nowadays. It’s so sad.

Without wishing to sound in any way patronising, some people simply grow out of that mentality of wanting to have everything. I'm so glad I did otherwise I would have a house FULL of stuff just collecting dust (up until the mid Noughties I had stacks of every magazine she ever featured on as well as all the music gubbins and more than one copy of every record released).

And as for supporting the artist, Kylie is literally the ONLY person I buy a physical copy for these days and I'd like to think I support in other ways (streaming, attending gigs, defending her to DEATH).

One thing that irks me is that of late, Kylie has been doing that "go, GO, GO!" thing (whenever something limited is released) on social media. It's really unbecoming of her.
