Survivor UK (Back after over 20 years away!)

I don’t think it’s awful, but yes not nearly as good. It’s all so rough around the edges, and the players don’t seem to have any idea what they’re doing.

Worse presenter
Worse challenges
Worse editing
Worse music
Worse contestants
Worse strategy
Worse results (obviously subjective but watching all the girls just get voted out one by one is something that has never happened even in the early days of the US one and is awful to watch)

I'd even appreciate an opening credits sequence. I LOVE that normally lol. I'd love to hear the Survivor theme tune on BBC TV, which is a bit of a niche complaint, but it would be soooo cool.

And yet, because Survivor is my favourite show I will stick with this - I still have hopes for a second season and for them to learn from their stupid mistakes.

The challenges at least (I have little recollection of much else) are infinitely better than Survivor New Zealand. That was like a primary school sports day.

I've not seen it but have heard really bad things. I'm only comparing to US and Australia to be honest.

I’ve got no issues with the challenges so far.
Contestants will vary from season to season, it might take them some time to get it right.
The only thing that really gets me is the music. The use of pop music all over the place really takes you out of the whole thing.

The challenges are so heavily weighted towards the men it’s ridiculous. It’s perpetuated this problem with the women being seen as less useful. (Well finally there was one more suited to women but by that point there were no women left on one tribe… and that challenge is suited to the individual portion of the game anyway).

There have been zero proper puzzles in the challenges so all the work Ren did in advance (they made loads of the previous Survivor puzzles on a 3D printer!) was completely useless. I’d have liked that extra work to have been rewarded.

Nathan channelling his inner Traitor with a parting gift to Shai was ICONIC TELEVISION.

Aside from that, it's been thoroughly enjoyable in a skippable way.

I'd never really picked up on Christopher speaking that way, or it being particularly unusual, because I have an old manager who was from Swansea who spoke very similarly.

When I've heard people doing a Huw Edwards impression, they tend to exaggerate the same thing - and just googling them, both Huw and Christopher are from Bridgend, which like Swansea, is in Glamorganshire.

So I wonder if it's a bit of a regional thing.

There's a lady currently speaking in this ep called Ashleigh, and I swear I have never seen her before in my life

I love Leilani's serious vote off expression.

The DRAMA... Lee looked like he was going to cry for half of that. Peg Leg and Laurence next please.

I think Ashleigh has been quite a big talking head…!

Just checked: total confessionals after first 8 episodes:

Doug 54
Jess 39
Ashleigh 33
Tinuke 32
Christopher 31
Laurence 30
Lee 25
Pegleg 25
Matthew 24
Leilani 22
Hannah 13

Actually one of the few things the Uk one has done well is share those out fairly reasonably with the exception of Hannah.

Who the fucking hell has counted THOSE? :D

It’s a very common thing to do in the Survivor community - it normally gives clues as to the edit so you can try and predict the winner..! Edgic (short for Edit Logic) is a way loads of fans analyse episodes and it includes looking at the number of confessionals.

Anyway, this episode easily the best for obvious reasons. The lack of strategy is still astonishing though and the three players just stepping down from the immunity challenge to hand Doug the win is yet another clear sign of the players’ lack of experience in the game.

Really pissed off with that immunity trial. So unsatisfying that the very first one they do as a single tribe they didn't even fight for.

What a prick Lee is though. Pleased he's gone. Shame he's on the jury.

Matthew and Hannah feel like deadwood at this point.

It was so so annoying. It just showed how badly they've cast this bunch that when they got down to 4 one of them asks for immunity and the other 3 just go 'oh ok then'. They clearly have no idea about the concept of building up a resumé. And to not fight for an immunity always deserves being voted out that episode in my opinion.

Lee's fresh look for the jury made him EVEN MORE TERRIFYING to me. Like someone who'd pull a knife on you outside a club

I loved his deranged comment following the vote off. Camp!

Except he shouldn't be speaking as part of the jury. It's a dangerous precedent allowing him to do that - if they start allowing them to say anything then they could have an influence on the game which is a big no no in my books.

But I kinda liked hearing it too because he's such a fucking prick.

'Even though the King is dead...' wasn't it?

Can't think why so many people were so easy to convince to get rid of him.

What I can't understand is why Tinuke was so quick to believe everything he said. Once again, testament to how bad the players are - Ashleigh and Chris should easily have been able to win Tinuke back at that point by just saying 'don't believe a word that comes out of that idiot's mouth' - instead they kinda went 'yeah you got us. We did think about voting you out'.

Well the non entity that is Hannah (who keeps being a rat) could corroborate that Lee was telling the truth. We only see the narrative that producers want to tell that fits with how they've edited the show around the winner and storylines that they want to create - there was surely more to the edit than meets the eye. I hope we get an interview with Ash (and Chris when he’s ultimately voted off) to explain more.

These players are just so rubbish. It’s like they all want it to be so kumbaya.. it’s so utterly dull. BBC could at least have given them a few seasons to watch before flying out there (or even in the plane) because some of them are just utterly inept.

Leilani has went from one of my early favs to just a total dud, her entire tribe were voting her out that night irrespective of whether it was for her to be gone or to the other tribe. She’s so gullible to think that they chose her because she was the most trusted- no love, you were were picked because you’re a bit useless and annoying.

The individual immunity idol is almost as ugly as the tribe one and don’t get be started on the hidden immunity idol! Seriously how budget was this show, you could probably buy something better on Etsy than their prop people have come up with.

Totally agree about the need for the jury to not speak, they need to gag Lee at the next one! He is literally one of the worst players to be cast in survivor for me. The irony of mum/sister orientated he was in the letter from home segment because he is one of the most chauvinistic pigs ever featured on these shows! Absolutely rotten.

Chris is seriously the only one I’m rooting for now, he’s coming across as a bit of a villain but without him these past two episodes would have been absolute dredge.

I must admit it took at least ten seconds for me to make any sense of Lee's little post vote-off comment. TWAT

I still think the last two episodes were by a considerable distance the best yet, but that's the nature of the merge being slightly more interesting. At least they aren't Pagonging, which is what I expected from this lot.

@cwej, I know that one because I stumbled across it when I got heavily into Australian Survivor, but you may need to start a Survivor glossary.

Pagong (verb): To vote all of the original members of the minority tribe out by tribal lines one by one at merge.

Both Lee and Ashleigh were in the majority tribe. Tinuke, Nathan, Leilani, Matthew and Laurence now make up the majority so if they wanted to go back to tribal lines they would actually have the majority now!!

I think it was one of the South African seasons I watched (or possibly that horrific NZ one) where I can't remember if it was a full on Pagonging or just relentlessly sticking to allyships after merge and it was SO DULL to watch. You could tell that whoever was editing it had fuck all to work with. And I remember when one woman dared to vote strategically, she was torn apart for it and completely ostracised.

It was very much how most of the early seasons played out in the US until people got wind of the fact that there was always going to be someone that was bottom of that 6 or 7 people... and then they started playing more dynamically when people started to wise up. SO I understand why the UK players haven't quite got that yet, but I still think should be a pre-requisite that they've at least watched a couple of modern seasons. It wouldn't surprise me if the producers intentionally cast lots of Survivor virgins, which was a massive mistake.

@cwej @lolly

I've just binged Survivor Australia S3 and I am in love with
Kristie
. Went from rooting for her as the slightly lost socially awkward underdog to being in awe by the finale.

I see what you mean about the UK version now, though I'm still enjoying it.

Tinuke PULLING THE STRINGS :disco:

He took it well anyway. Enjoyed Christopher's complete messiness this episode, running around desperately all over the place (and going for the water bottle at that moment).

They were all gagging at Ash's jury glow up and she was living for the blindside :D
