FISTING WON’T SAVE HIM NOW!

I noticed the absence of GAZ-written material as well :D

One thing that really bothered me was after Robbie takes the mic from Gary during a concert (never happened but whatever), he goes back to his position in the back as the next song starts - and it's notable Robbie solo Everything Changes :oi: (we only hear the intro)

Pick any other song? Or maybe it was an intentional EASTER EGG

A biopic of Robbie Williams feels, inessential at best.

Does it cover the moment both his and (inexplicably) his non-entity wife were appointed X Factor judges.

This film is better than it has any right to be, but they certainly don't let the timeline get in the way of a story. It's implied that he hadn't had a hit or even written with Guy Chambers when Never Ever hit number 1 for All Saints. Pretty sure Angels was in the top 10 at the same time.

Also no mention of the wife who I thought was the one that got him off the drugs, so that was strange.

This is going to do rather well, in the UK at least, isn't it?

I think the monkey thing is a significant barrier for casual audiences, though you get over it very quickly once you're watching.

Word of mouth will be strong from those who do go... it'll be interesting.

Jonathan Wilkes' Wikipedia page only references that he is best mates with Robbie Williams five times, which is sorely misrepresenting his career.

HANG ON

The production budget for this was $110m?! CGI isn’t cheap but that is astonishing - it is going to make an incredible loss.

Yes, I saw that earlier and was astonished. It clearly needs to find an audience larger than I would have thought wanted it.

They actually didn't use CGI. That's just the cost of sustaining the monkey's coke habit for the length of pre-production.

It seems bonkers to me. Maybe I am missing something but the odds of this getting to half the production budget worldwide feel unlikely - it has opened tepidly even in the UK. The WOM is strong so it could leg-out (similar to The Greatest Showman) but even in the event it does that in the UK, it is likely DOA on the American market.

It's not inconceivable that it recoups its budget at all. The next few weeks will be telling. The director of this last directed The Greatest Showman, which made $260 million outside the USA & Canada.

Now I'm not suggesting that this is going to be Greatest Showman big, but Robbie is a massive star pretty much everywhere outside North America. If this winds up having good legs and an awards run, it could very well break even or better.

Given it opened on Boxing Day I wouldn't put too much stock in the opening numbers, films you can stick kids in front of routinely do far better on the post-Christmas weekend, hence it opening behind four kiddy franchise movies.

I think it might be a mistake to apply his past success to his relevance and popularity in 2024. He hasn't released an album in 5 years and the last couple haven't been anywhere near the peak of his success. The compilation project from a couple of years ago was a damp squib. And that's before you even get to whether he can transfer pop success into box office.

I didn't see the point of this before and I still don't.

Well other than the aforementioned narcissism and vanity exercise.

I think it's equally a mistake to judge relevance or popularity now for him on album sales. He's still capable of selling tens of thousands of tickets live.

Indeed. It's like saying Elton John hadn't had a hit in a while just before Rocketman came out.
