House of the Dragon (GoT Prequel)

I thought the pacing of the wedding party was wonderful. All that intrigue and scandal happening between long stares, awkward parades, false pleasantries and gossiping. It was like Shakespeare meets School For Scandal :disco:

to have one child like this is a mistake, three is an insult :disco:

The entrance of Princess Rhaenys Targaryen (and her posse) was electric. The appalled pomposity of it all was my favourite moment so far. And I knew I recognised her from somewhere - Nurse Jackie!

But fuck that was a good episode. The gags just kept on punching.

The sheer RUCKUS.

Lady Alicent is still my highlight. She's so tragic, but there's a wisdom growing in her that's gonna gag us later. Never underestimate a basic bitch.

I'd also like to say how much this show deserves credit for not collapsing under the weight of ridiculous expectations. So far most people seem to be really enjoying the show. The reviews have been strong and the social media commentary positive. I am honestly surprised; this old cynic was expecting more of a problematic first season.

Best episode so far for sure, but am I missing something? How did Ser Criston just violently murder a wedding guest and then casually stroll out to contemplate suicide at his own leisure?

There was definitely a bit of creative license for the benefit of a strong closing sequence, but I could summise that as a kingsguard and personal guard to the Princess, he is about 300 stations above the other fella who, while a guard, was not yet a royal guard, and for the purpose of spin, could easily have been labelled as a disturber of the peace by the palace (the Princess, the king, the hand, the kingsguard) in order to avoid a major diplomatic quarrel at a very unfortunate moment and quickly dismissed. Straight out of the Tory playbook :eyes:

That would have led to the Valyrian son throwing a tantrum only to be hushed by his family for fear of ruining the chance of being made King Consort.

You kind of just have to assume I think. In order for the events to unfold the way they were meant to.

bad news for miss @dUb

The fifth episode of the Game of Thrones prequel drew 3% more U.S. viewers than Episode 4, Variety has learned exclusively. Additionally, Season 1 is now averaging 29 million viewers per episode across its first five episodes. That’s a massive audience for any premium cable series, and a very promising sign that it’s going the way of its predecessor: “Game of Thrones” averaged more than 44 million viewers per episode for its eighth and final season in 2019.

The “House of the Dragon” Episode 5 statistics combine Nielsen’s measurement of Sunday’s four cable airings with the number of streaming viewers across HBO Max and other HBO platforms.

In the book Ser Criston killed Kisses in a tourney during the wedding celebrations. That would have required less explaining anyway in terms of plot, but I suppose they had already done an incidental tourney death or two and they must wanted have wanted the drama and a messy end to the banquet.

I wonder how they'll explain why Ser Criston is still around and a serving knight. even if we assume Alicent made that happen, there'd have to be some pretext to it, beyond all of the viewers wanting him to dick them.

I think as a Kingsguard he could say that he thought Joeffry was threatening Rhaenyra and with Alicent’s influence get away with it. He’s like secret service, can do what he wants if I he claims it’s for protection. No one is gonna want to raise a stink about the future King consort’s gay lover.

Also let’s not forget Viserys is a shit king who’s own brother can come back after being banished and he does nothing.

I was worried that the transition would be rough to the older actors but it was glorious. Both Emma Darcy and Olivia Cook are just spot on.

Also Larys Strong after a weak monologue last week just burst into the scene in full psycho mode.

Even Laena who has been so far relegated into a line here and there got a cool ending.

Haven’t seen it yet but glad the new actors have a great start. They’d only be judged heavily if they didn’t after the first era actors have been so heavily praised.

an absolutely fucking fire hour of television. I didn't want it to end. it didn't even take 5 minutes to accept the new cast.

the world they inhabit suddenly feels much bigger in scope, the stakes seem higher, Alicent is running the show, Viserys' hair now resembles armpit hair, his oldest son is wanking out of a window, and Rhaenyra has the nerve and the audacity to pretend that people don't know her children are not Velaryon by blood... :D I want to know what the Queen who never was thinks about this!!!

I loved this episode even if Alicent has very much turned. I know there was the decade leap but I do wonder if they could have dropped a few more hints of this side of her in the last couple of episodes. The new cast all did very well though.

New Laena was obviously too well adjusted to last on the show as Daemon's wife, but they managed to make a little go a long way in her scenes I thought.

Alicent’s heel turn is mild conmpared to Ser Stroppy Chops Cristin Cole! What a DIVA :D

This show is starting to remind me of Succession where the silence is stronger than the noise and the implied harsher than the truth. The tension is fabulous

Also Emma D’Arcy is a total QOL, I’ve already forgotten about the other cast!

Not sure i needed a time jump that involved about 300 new children :D

“He belongs to her and she belongs to them and who the fucks the father of that one?”

Why is Rhyanerya shagging a new guard who seems to have come from nowhere?

Why did Criston stab the gay one? Because he knew the secret? Seemed a bit OT.

Rhyanerya’s actual secret is that she’s big old lesbob right?

Criston turned to Alicent because she didn’t have him tortured?

I think the show is trying to show a comparison in how different people adapt to cutthroat politics. I think both Criston and Alicent start off fairly 'innocent' in their younger years. Criston is a hopeless romantic and Alicent is a timid daddy's girl who's happy to be a good wife to the king. But while Criston clearly lets the pressure of court politics consume him, and ends up murdering the gay guy and later turning into an unfeeling cunt, Alicent endures it much better by keeping her 'goodness' and instead tries to actually fight the corruption in the court.

I think that's why she says the bit about hoping that "honor and decency" will prevail, and then later on she clearly regrets having someone killed. I'm guessing that she'll eventually be unable to keep enduring the mess and slowly turn into a villain.

I love her. You hate her basic ass, but you know she was right the whole time.

I don't think you're following the show properly :D

Are you one of those people who plays on their phone when watching a show like this? HEATHEN!

I can’t wait for tonight’s episode :disco: 👁️

Another strong episode not as good as last week but I loved the events that led to the knife scene and then to have all of Alicent’s anger out there.

Also that ending is a departure from the book cause that character is just murdered.

Yeah I loved all of this with a good old family squabble.
