Kylie - Tension (Album XVI)

10/10?

I think so - in the midweeks the only figures counting towards Extension were physical copies. I believe any streaming (and I’m guessing downloads as it had none of those) went to the Tension album…possibly why they grouped them digitally in order for the actual album to get those ‘sales’?

No one gives a shit about Extension, do they?

And I’m not surprised- most of the extended reworkings are just the odd extra loop here and there. And an extended mix being 4 or so minutes long doesn’t allow for much more.

They really are taking the piss.

Vegas High is the exception- but still could have been so much more.

I've given this another spin this morning and I stand by this entirely, but Vegas High is a proper REMIX, right? I wonder if that's because it's been lined up for single release and so they had it waiting in the wings.

They have to bring out and push Vegas High come January after everyone's done with Xmas songs. It has to be a SINGLE.

Yes i was thinking about this the other day, as you do. I think 'The Things We Do For Love' is the next strongest track but Hold On To Now being released might have scuppered that being released they need to go for something quite different and Vegas High is that in terms of being a nice little catchy pop number rather than a SULTRY GEM. I do think it will sound great on the radio in January, and hopefully we get a vegas type video :disco:

Vegas High is the complete obvious fourth single for me, a nice late Jan/Feb release would be lovely.

The extended Vegas High is wonderful but I wish the outro was just a little more euphoric.

I agree that it would make sense as a different single, as much as I love Things We Do For Love. Shame that Hold On To Now didn't get the video treatment at least.

Seen today there is talk of her doing some STADIUMS for the next tour. I kind of guessed she may do bigger venues and less dates given Vegas. But we will see.

I can see her doing a one-off Wembley date maybe to crown the tour, kind of a Glasto esque victory lap, but the tour itself needs to be arenas. Kylie is just that kind of artist.

Has held rather well this week I see, still #44 with around 3k sold. Puts it at about 78k, so it will trickle down to gold at some point next year which is surely a decent result if a bit less than anticipated following PP’s success.

How do those sales compare to other big releases this year?

She’s #98 in the YTD chart. But I’d say only about 25 of those ahead would’ve actually been 2023 releases - I don’t have the full list sadly.

So how is the album shaping up in terms of STATS? Underwhelming or fine?

Given it's clearly a big personal favourite of Kylie herself, I'm really surprised the way they just let Hold Onto Now die a quiet death over Christmas.

Well it was getting the airplay, she performed it a couple of times. It had a lyric video.

Onto VEGAS HIGH now. I hope we get physical CD's, a montage vegas video, and whatever remixes she needs to get a top 40 which would be a nice little icing on the cake

by all accounts there IS a video for Hold On to Now so it's super weird that they didn't push it to coincide with the Audience With.

her team have dropped the ball on quite a few occasions. not having a tour announcement (assuming there will be a tour) at all last year was a mistake. not having Tension ready to go until August was another - a month earlier would've been smart. not giving anything a proper third single push around Christmas... they've failed to capitalise on quite a few key moments.

Are we likely to get a fourth single at this stage? I'm wondering if a new track from an inevitable reissue is more likely.

I wouldn't be against them re-promoting HOTN given it never stood a chance over the Christmas period, but it's going to be a tough sell considering it's already been and gone from radio playlists.

Comparing it to Disco (and I believe Golden?), and considering the number of formats and the success of Padam Padam, I have to say I'd have hoped for at least slightly better than 82k at this stage.

How realistic that is, I'm not hugely certain. Or why it hasn't been is another question.

And I'd also like to see how it stacks against other albums released last year as well, rather than just comparing it to Disco.

I'm sure Take That did considerably more than Lana though I don't blame you for not including them.

Did Lewis pip Olivia to the post by throwing out that 'limited edition' for a fiver and the extended edition in the dying days of 2023?

They have dropped the ball considerably with this album.

Also though I love the song I've found performances of Tension lacking. She needs a new choreographer.

Wasn't Hold On To Now meant to be featured in that new Shondaland show, the shooting for which was interrupted by the strikes? I wonder if that's why they didn't bother. Regardless, I reckon it's too late now to push it.

Album wise it could’ve done better, but I’m happy overall with the project. It’ll easily hit gold given it’s still doing about 1k a week, and PP is obviously her biggest hit in a decade. Even Tension nabbing a week top 20 is massive.

A bit more of a push on HOTN would’ve been nice, but given any charting it would’ve done was based around timing of physicals etc it’s a pretty hard game for the label to play as I doubt it was ever going to be an ongoing Padam type successful single.

The timing sucked for HOTN. It's impossible for most non xmas songs to get anywhere near the top 75 in December now. Any brief momentum from An Audience With or radio was well and truly lost in the Xmas charts (which is practically six weeks now 🙄)

All in all I can only assume the team have put all the energy into Vegas which is a shame, after the success of PP, there was so much to build on here in the UK.

yeah I don't return to this album... at all. short shelf life! still gagging for a tour though. it'll be mostly classics anyway.

Oh I have been impressed with her performances of Tension. I was thinking the track would be really hard to do live and I think the performances I've seen of the track have been impressive.

It’s cheap and boring.

I’ll be front row for any weirdly located dates though :D

:o

Poor Tenshun. The gays are so fickle :( Chrissy was spotted upon album release crying with happiness into his large glass of Kylie Rose to 'Hold on For Now' in the corner of FREEDOM BAR, now he doesn't know her :o

You know we gays move on very quickly.

An album needs more than one streaming hit to happen nowadays, otherwise it's fanbase sales and very little else. Ultimately, the album isn't that good and the pricing/formatting speared a bit of goodwill. I'm sure her tour will be as successful as her last one and I look forward to seeing how they turn PP into a 10 minute showstopper.

The fact that they have kept live performances of Padam in her shows short and succinct suggests otherwise.

People also seem to be overlooking the fact that she had TWO top 20 singles on this album - which other female pop singer of her age can lay claim to that?

Also this increasing revisionism when it comes to Kylie's albums - Disco and now Tension, is beginning to grate. It's not perfect but Tension is good, great even.
