* I refuse to recognise this is not Running Up That Hill.

Surely it’s got to be wrong as well.

Firstly, they’re trumpeting it as a celebration of the anniversary of our chart but its either US based or worldwide given that list.

Secondly, is Mariah really not the biggest ever streamed song from 1994??

I'm surprised people are streaming Let me love you by Mario in high numbers. I can barely remember how it goes!

The BBC story says Christmas songs were excluded, which I guess is fair enough

I guess Tiktok is more internationally spread, so if something becomes a Tiktok hit in the US, it might cross over? IDK, I hadn’t even heard of that BIG song but it’s got almost half a billion YouTube views

I suppose, but I think Miley is the obvious one there- surely that's US- streaming skewed.

I love that Everywhere is so ridiculously big. Is there any reason for it? I remember the younger people we hang around with had a renaissance of it big time ten years or so ago but other than that...

Ah, maybe that initially sparked it then. I have no recollection.

But not complaining!

2013 is Riptide by Vance Joy? I have never knowingly encountered this song.

Agog that 1999 isn't Britney

Even more agog that it isn't further ahead in her back catalogue. Oops is streamed almost as much.

1978 'September' seems a weird choice too. I'd expect 'Night Fever' to be at number 1 without a doubt (unless the release was staggered elsewhere and some countries were in '77?)

Night Fever - 281 million
September - 1.1 BILLION

1997 - Bitter Sweet Symphony by The Verve
1998 - Iris by Goo Goo Dolls
1999 - No Scrubs by TLC

2000s

2000 - Dancing In The Moonlight by Toploader
2001 - How You Remind Me by Nickelback
2002 - Lose Yourself by Eminem

Given how pop heavy this era was that is a shocking run, TLC aside I guess

I didn't think the entire list was too bad until the late 90s, where it mostly falls off a cliff right up to the present day

*old*

So when you go to an artist's page on Spotify and it shows about five popular songs with streaming stats, is that UK based or world?

My favourite from each decade:
50s: Johnny B Goode
60s: Paint It Black
70s: Go Your Own Way
80s: We Didn’t Start The Fire
90s: Iris/Smells Like Teen Spirit (a TIE :o )
00s: Naive
10s: UGH Love The Way You Lie, probably
20s: UGH! Probably Bad Habits, which is a horrible thing to admit

This list is either US or worldwide I think

I wouldn't have thought Night Fever was that big on streaming. September seems to be much more present nowadays even if Night Fever was everywhere back in "the day."

I think it might be more that UK streaming stats are so heavily skewed by "passive streams" of published playlists these days. And song selections on published playlists tend to be very US-centric.

Spotify in particular spam "Party In The USA" onto every single "throwback" or "songs to sing in the car" or other "basic bitch" playlist.
