Old TOTP (BBC4)

I've never seen The Young Ones but I enjoyed that Neil performance!

Alison Moyet not looking her best in that Love Resurrection video.

There's quite an interesting interview with Sara Cox on Sounds Of The 80s on Radio 2 this week, and for viewing pleasure I believe it's still on the red button.

Totp 1984 is seriously amazing right now.
It's brilliant! It takes me back to the summer of 1984 when I was working in a record shop during the long summer break from uni. The weather in August 1984 was wonderful, a very hot summer. Unfortunaley I had to listen to 'Agadoo' at least half a dozen times each day...

According to my loose calculations, Black Lace would’ve been 31 here.

WHAT
THE
FUCK.

Can someone explain the Tracy Ullman thing? Is it a piss take because the few songs I’ve seen on this are all great, it’s not novelty at all and she’s legit a viable popstar.

I just don’t understand!

Oh it was all a serious effort - signed to STIFF if you please; no K-Tel or Pickwick International here - albeit one with a saucy wink along the way. Apparently the silly woman isn't very keen on the whole thing now which is entirely ridiculous given that her musical endeavours were the absolute career highlight :disco:

EXACTLY the same, except move OVER, darling, and let "I Know What Boys Like" in at number 4.

OUR TRACE was quite the legit poster of the time, but it's surely been with her subsequent career that it's been seen that she's more of a novelty, right? I don't really recall- I owned "My Guy" and that was it from that era...

I proper loved the 'You Broke My Heart In 17 Places' album. 'You Caught Me Out' a bit less so.

I bought 'Breakaway', I don't know why because my interest in POP MUSIC didn't really revive until 1984.

NO NO NO
NO NO NO NO NO
NO NO
NO NO NO
NO NO NO NO NO

I guess Trace was quite well known for being on THREE OF A KIND with SIR LENWORTH OF HENRY and the unlamented DAVID COPPERFIELD but I can't really remember how popular that was

It all got a bit confusing as well because there was Our Trace and then there was TRACIE who was some DREARY OFFSHOOT of PAUL WELLER or something

'Three Of A Kind' seemed ever so modern and hilarious at the time - just look at those COMPUTER GRAPHICS! - but I can't remember a single thing about it. Also, I thought Cannon and Ball were hilarious when I saw them in Great Yarmouth so we'll discreetly and swiftly draw a veil over my relationship with hilarity at that point in time

The only thing I don't RECALL of TONIGHT'S COUNTDOWN OF TOP HITS is THIS LOAD OF OLD GUFF and NO WONDER

Oh she was FRIGHTFULLY DULL

Just the ONE HIT as I recall :disco:

Having been brought up with the sounds of GH of Elton John on repeat I know most his hits, including Passengers. I don't remember it being so fucking awful.

Alphaville didn't do much for me, least of all Mike Reid's explanation of what Big In Japan means.

Just watching 'The 80s with Dominic Sandbrook' on BBC4 now. Getting to the AIDS crisis and watching Mike Smith teaching an audience how to put on condoms :zombie:

Loved the George performance :(
Yes it was quite on point. He looked so young and handsome and a bit like Dame Princess Diana (QOL).

The listing said Miami Sound Machine would feature. I wish they'd just dump the whole thing on iPlayer. Also, bit odd that Stevie Wonder wasn't shown, still always good to hear Self Control again.

I actually don't hate that Rod Stewart song.

Catching up....my memory completely erased all trace of Windjammer despite the name having comedy potential for an 11 year old me...

Blancmange would get savaged for "cultural appropriation" nowadays...

That Laura Brannigan video is shonky as fuck. 2 masks, a joblot of binbags and Bob's yer uncle.

Ah, FGTH pulling the ol' instrument-swapping stunt. Bless 'em.

In my defense, I've got a washing in, otherwise I;d probably just fuck off to bed.

I had this Tears For Fears record on green vinyl. It came with a window sticker. Such were the vagaries of marketing in the 80's.

I had this Howard Jones record too....the b-side "Bounce Right Back" was much better. I only bought it after he did the latter song on The Tube.

None of the fruit costumes on stage with Black Lace are a pineapple. Someone messed up a bit there.

I hate this. The roots of Brexit can be found in "Agadoo".

I maintain that Iron Maiden are the most influential British band of all time. This song is a bit shit tho'.

"Big In Japan" - banger. Had no recollection of what they looked like. Seemingly my brain doing me a favour there.
