Old TOTP (BBC4) (1 Viewer)

Did Nik Kershaw insist his band had to have the same haircut as him?

"Life On Your Own" is a great record but poor Phil Oakey - he looks like he's been gene-spliced with Fish from Marillion in his sleep.

I've dipped out of TOTP in recent times- how many episodes are they showing a week now? I'm kind of annoyed it's gone so QUICK! 1984 is totally the best year ever in music...

Usually 2 but it was cut to 1 during the Proms and none on the weeks when The Sky At Night had the Thursday slot.

"Young At Heart" really is one of the most unlikely hits...and a great one for Six Degrees Of Separation fans because Siobhan Fahey co-wrote it and that's Craig Gannon on guitar...did the fiddler not sure for a chunk of the royalties after it was in an advert or something?

All of Bananarama co-wrote it, didn't they? It's on their first album, albeit in a quite different version.

She didn't just write it, it's a cover of a song on the Nanas' first album. She was shagging one of the band and wrote it with him.

Wikipedia says that the original is indeed credited to all three Nanas and Hodgens but that The Bluebells version is Hodgens, Fahey and the aforementioned fiddler. Dunno how different they are.

And yeah, it's credited to all of them but I seem to recall it being said it was just Siobhan writing with her boyfriend REALLY...

I preferred once a week- I had time to keep up with that. But I must whizz back through 84, cause it's TOO GOOD TO MISS

Am I right in thinking that when it was rereleased in the 90s, 'Young At Heart' held a Madonna single from #1?

It was really confusing me thinking about it until I realised it didn't hit #1 until the rerelease.

"Two Tribes" really is FUCKING BRILLIANT. It still sounds huge.

Looking at the date (March 93), it wouldn't appear so...

It wouldn't be Kylie either, then.

I'm sure I had a reason for SEETHING RESENTMENT other than it being fucking annoying.

I've checked - the only record the reissued Young At Heart stopped from reaching No. 1 was Informer by Snow. A-licky boom-boom-daaaaan.

Going bald really was the best thing that happened to him hairwise.

I climbed on the back of a giant ANCHOVY
And flew off through a gap in the clouds
To a land where music was playing INCREDIBALLY LOUDLY
And everyone was having a REALLY GOOD TIME
EXCEPT ME

I hadn't considered that around this time I was banished to my bedroom each week to watch The Young Ones on our black and white portable that needed subtle retuning with the dial every five minutes or so, and a not so subtle smack on the side of it in between that to stop the picture rolling.

I think I've got The Young Ones on DVD somewhere. I remember watching repeats on UK Gold fairly frequently during the 90s but don't think I've watched it properly since. I must try and dig it out.

Worse, I had to sneak into my brother's bedroom to watch it with him on HIS black and white portable with a tuning dial.

I owned Neil as well.

And I did the bedroom B&W "The Young Ones" thing too, albeit with my older brothers who used to watch it. I wasn't allowed, but they'd wake me up especially so I could join in the fun :disco:

Is he one of the earlier broadcast edited version casualties?
It would be really unfair if he was given how much of that show was on video but then, he clearly mouths the word "cunt" instead of "coat" so it could be his own fault...

Um, WORSE. It was our TV as I shared a bedroom with my brother.

You win.

That is definitely Bill Drummond down the front on that Echo and The Bunnymen performance...wish I could work out what's written on his knock-off Frankie t-shirt.

Funny episode this - a few things I remember more fondly than they sound now - The Kane Gang sound really weedy and that Billy Idol song now feels thin and contrived.

Yes funnily enough Graham Norton asked them about Young At Heart on his radio show this very day and they basically said this. Sara/Keren hate the Bananarama version (of course).

Loved The Mighty Wah and Divine of course, not least a somewhat lost for words Peter Powell doing the link afterwards. Completely agree that this would be better once a week, with the unavailable episodes they are racing through.

I always loved the Billy Idol record, it's quite moody. The Kane Gang were singing about life under Maggie, the message of which is somewhat lost in the song.

@Robbie, can you post the chart each week here like you do on ukmix?

Or if not, do you have any issue with me copying your post there and pasting it here? :D

I don't post them there, I just post Alan Jones' chart analyses... but you're welcome to post them if you want, I won't complain! The charts are posted by another poster. I'm sure he won't mind either...
