Old TOTP (BBC4)

I don't think I ever realised I Feel For You was such a big hit. Obviously it's a fucking wonder, but it's such an unlikely 3 week #1.

Ah, so it would. I guess everyone would understand why tho'. Glitter, unlike Savile and Travis, isn't one of the BBC's own failings.

Depeche Mode's music feels quite dated in 1984, when you compare it to the Hi-NRG stuff that was around.

Caribbean Queen is a right tune though, despite being Billie Jean 2.0.

I'd never quite clocked that but it IS rather "Billie Jean" isn't it!?

Still fucking amazing, though...

Depeche Mode only sounds dated as much as you find the 80s dated. The TOTP re-runs have left me rather 80s obsessed and the sound is rather fresh for me.

I just think it sounds more like the empty clinky-clank of 1981 than the bassier stuff of '84.

God I hate DURAN DURAN. Even NILE RODGERS could only make them MARGINALLY LESS SHIT

I've never seen anyone GROOVE while sporting a RICTUS GRIN to the sound of JIM DIAMOND before

I remember this episode from the time when they kept playing the INTRO to 'I'm So Excited' in every LINK so you keep thinking it's COMING UP NEXT but it NEVER DOES

And it held off Duran Duran's Wild Boys. Not that that DESERVED it over Chaka ( or indeed ANYONE), but I remember at the time it being BIG NEWS that they didn't get it.

They have had the odd moment for me, over the years.

And it does amuse me that my autocorrect changes them to Sudan Sudan.

Chaka HATED 'I Feel For You'

For five years I have been going into the studio, really working at creating masterpieces, mixing jazz and rock and funk. So now I do this song [I Feel For You] and put rapping on it–which really is the pits! The lowest thing you can do, from an artist’s standpoint.

I remember when LIFE IS A DANCE: THE REMIX PROJECT came out and she did loads of interviews about how much she HATED that TOO :D

I genuinely don't think I realised how horrible the talking verses of One Night in Bangkok are. I am very familiar with the choruses but I don't even recall the bits in-between.

Literally agog throughout.

The A*Teens cover is obvs iconic.

I can't believe Queen Chaka is about to be dethroned by some gross drunk Glaswegian.

Can't believe Kala had a #1.

Did Madonna use parts of that Kane Gang song for Express Yourself?

Phil Oakey looking arguably his WORST in that Louise video.

Oh God I'm getting FLASHBACKS to 1984

I remember the NASTY GREEN CARPET in my BEDROOM

And my dad telling me off for making too much noise WANKING :shy:

FUCKING BLACK LACE.

Is there legit a worse blight on musical history?

Next week we would’ve got Madge in the studio if it wasn’t for Gary Glitter being such a paedo. Furious.

Pretty sure Alvin Stardust was BORN too old to wear his t-shirt in a knot.

A mixed blessing of an episode. Jim Diamond looks like something from Blue Planet.

As the next two TOTP episodes aren't going to be shown, here's a link to them...

I'd just like to point out for the sake of clarity that I wasn't wanking TO TOTP

It just gives me GENERALIZED NOSTALGIA for my ill-spent TEENAGE YEARS

Wikipedia tells me that Vance's real name was Richard Anthony Crispian Francis Prew Hope-Weston. What a bell end.

I must be the only poster at moopy who quite liked Tommy Vance! He was a walking disaster at times when he presented the top 40, including once knocking over a pile of records live on radio on the top 40 while he was playing 'I Love Rock 'N' Roll' by Joan Jett which caused the needle to skate across the record (I still have that on tape!) because he'd had too much to drink that Sunday afternoon. But his heart was in the right place. John Peel once said Vance was his favourite presenter at Radio 1.
