The UK: The Keir Starmer years (2 Viewers)

I noted a right-wing RAG referring to the proposed removal as "The Widow's Tax" which must have spooked a few people almost as much as the Winter Fuel Allowance withdrawal.

Labour were like

Aye, poor soul hadn't had his lunch and got confused. Wes Streeting was asked about it and replied "Hamas. Hamas. You're Hamas, you are".

I literally couldn't give a fuck about the clothing gifts. Talk about a distraction.

Labour made such a big show of criticising Boris Johnson's ugly wallpaper and takeaways. They set their own trap with this one.

Also, Duffield was always going to bail early - she's a George Galloway type, obsessed with a single issue. There won't be a by-election because of our broken system and it wouldn't surprise me if she formed/joint a TERF party, maybe that one that got less votes than Monster Raving Loony in the election.

I wonder if she was going to be pushed? Doing this before the budget has even been announced is just patently ludicrous.

Have they had a bad start? I couldn't give a flying fuck about free clothes and the only MP disowning them is a rotten TERF. They've been honest about the horrendous state the Tories left them in and frankly I wasn't surprised.

I don't read the papers but I'm sure they've got plenty to say about them and will continue to do so until the day they lose power. That's what a Labour government endures in this country. Accountable criticism by the left and unhinged criticism based on lies by the right. Social media platforms are now almost entirely a tool for the far right movement, so media influence and propoganda is at its worst probably in history. Which is ironic when we live in a world of open platform information and free news.

HEY HO

The only thing I feel at the moment is that they’ve not actually done MUCH.

The winter fuel payment is bad politics, it's a very easy attack on them, and bad policy. Universalism is good and they should balance the budget another way.

They have been doom and gloom and haven't outlined anything remotely positive whatsoever. They thought they could coast on not being Tories but obvs that's not enough.

GENERAL ELECTION NOW! (semi-ironic)

The winter fuel payment is bad optics, but I actually don’t disagree with in theory. It’s nonsense that the rich should get it. And my Mother, who lives in a care home and pays for zero fuel, got it last year.

How quickly we forget the depths of sleaze that accompanied the Tory years. Much like the US, the media goes looking for things to complain about because they don't have mask contracts for mates or partygates or cabinet ministers taking liberties and second jobs controversies... it all feels very lightweight. The expectations are never EQUAL.

I mean... YET... it's early days. And yes the winter fuel payment was a mistake.

Yeah I think their main problems have been

1) Announcing the winter fuel thing months before the full budget, allowing it to run and run with basically zero counter-narrative

2) Making their whole vibe so bloody MISERABLE. I understand that they’re going for a ‘the grown ups are back in charge’ narrative, but they’ve totally over-egged it. They encouraged people to vote for CHANGE and now their whole message seems to be ‘Sorry, everything’s fucked. Deal with it.’ It’s actually obscured some of the pretty significant wins they have had (breaking most of the union deadlocks, for example) and basically handed control of the narrative to their critics.
