Eastenders 2023

Sorry but it all seems a bit FAR FETCHED TO ME. Not seen Peter for 25 years but breaking her heart because he goes AWOL for a day. Cindy is one of the all time Eastenders great villains (Janine who). Not sure if some of you are too young to remember her in her PRIME but she had to come back as the same character as she was otherwise WHATS THE POINT. Hopefully it is just building….

I wouldn’t even call her a villain. She was just someone who had aspirations to be more than what she was and was constantly looking for something better, using Ian as a doormat when she was in trouble. She just went a little TOO FAR sometimes. Nowhere near on the level of Janine.

I pretty much re-watched Eastenders from 1991-1999 from the Drama Channel repeats during lockdown lunchtimes, so it’s rather fresh in my memory.

I would certainly disagree. Adultery, attempted murder, fraud, kidnapping and blackmail just to name a few would certainly have built the road that many a villain followed after.

She PAID for the hitman (and unsuccessfully tried to call it off). Janine would have done it herself and finished the job! And kidnapping your own children is hardly on the same level.

Of course it’s just building, she’s not even back on the square yet.

That said, it would be a little silly if she just came back as a caricature of what she was in the 90s. Of course there needs to be some of that, but it’s 25 years later, obviously she’ll be somewhat different.

Well that would generally be the clever thing to do. She didn’t want to get her hands dirty. She DEFINITELY goes down in history as one of Eastenders greatest villains. How you think otherwise is just WRONG on every level. :D

I suppose this is a soap and in these things nothing ever happens quickly.

But she was always just portrayed as being at the point of desperation. She justified everything she did and it was never out of an act of malice or revenge. Just to advance herself. Ian was threatening to take the kids away if she left him after finding out about David, so she took desperate measures.

I used to love Cindy’s friendship with Gita. Innocent Gita just being her confidante and just keeping it all to herself.

I actually don't think Janine was evil, she was very layered. There's been a lot of moments during storylines where you can see she has a heart. This is why she can come back and do it all again, we love her but hate her.

To begin with yes, but after everything with Michael Moon, all the comebacks since she’s been plain evil. The “Daddy didn’t give me attention” excuse no longer washes. And her TALES of “growing up in The Vic” are utter rubbish. She was barely there for a year.

Normal hinged people at the point of desperation don’t hire hitmen! :D She went through a court case and was given sole custody anyway only to be jailed for her wrongdoing which generally happens to every villain eventually when they get their comeuppance.

Kim Tate in Emmerdale was a similar character to Cindy in many ways and to get her own way she also attempted (and succeeded) to kill off her husband. Another one that goes down as one of the greatest villains in soap. She had a great relationship with SETH ARMSTRONG and SAM DINGLE which showed she wasn’t all bad.

So to stand by my original point, unless we get UNHINGED SUPERBITCH Cindy I don’t see the point in bringing her back from the dead and having a happy ever after.

I think it's sometimes the nature of soaps and past characters that they're given broad-brush legacies based on one or two of their most memorable storylines. Cindy is definitely more nuanced than just being an out-and-out villain, but that's what she's become regarded as over the last 25 years.

It was similar to Kim Tate when she returned to Emmerdale. Again, mostly remembered as being an iconic "soap bitch" and given a ludicrously camp return, but it lacked any of the substance that made her character tick in the first place because she was capable of forming genuine friendships and relationships alongside the scheming and villainy. The show has sort of corrected that now, although I'd argue she's been watered down a tad too much.

I don’t know if this is just lazy writing, or if their is a point to her mentioning growing up in The Vic.

I definitely want Cindy to have been changed by everything that's happened to her, it would feel cheap to have her as a cartoon villain after all this time. More than anything I'm looking forward to seeing her interact with George and the two girls, it'll be interesting to try and see what their dynamic was like when they were all together.

I remember her relationship with Seth, Emmerdale got it spot on there. This scene with Lisa was also brilliant and they made it up after this

So you are wanting her to come back as different character? Are you a fan of the actress?

I do certainly agree that it will be interesting to see the dynamics with the family initially. I don’t think they are working all that well right now. It all feels quite disjointed, and hopefully that is on purpose for Cindy’s BIG RETURN.

Janine comes back as a caricature villain time and time again and it works so hopefully Eastenders can read that is what the majority of fans want otherwise WHATS THE POINT after all this time. It is her scheming that people remember her for.

Did Janine's most recent return work? I don't think she was immune from the dreadful creative direction of the show at the time, and it seemed like a bit of a waste for the most part. Certainly not a return worthy of the tremendous way they wrote her out last time.

I would have thought so. It was used to write out Danny Dyer who was probably the biggest character in the programme at the time so I certainly would have said it was high profile and will be remembered.

Well I am a fan of the actress, but that's not what I'm saying :D I just want the character to have DEVELOPED a bit offscreen, as anyone would have over twenty-five years or however long it's been. I have faith that they'll find a good balance for her going forward.

Do we know if Adam Woodyatt and Michelle Collins are back long term? I remember Adam Woodyatt saying a while back he was happy away from Eastenders and just wondered if they managed to bring him back due to Michelle Collins agreeing to come back to bring Cindy back from the dead to finish Ian off once and for all?

As if.

Theo reminds me too much of Peter MacNicol’s character in Ghostbusters 2

I guess there’s much more to come out yet with the Knights. Even so, Cindy and Kathy’s showdown ending with them making hors d'oeuvres together seemed a bit weird?

I wonder if this was just a gravestone prop they had in storage, or was it previously established that Lucy was buried close to Jimmy Harris (Pat's brother/Big Mo's husband)?
