Old TOTP (BBC4) (3 Viewers)

Interesting that Paul Rutherford was absent from the Power of Love performance. I guess his hi-NRG dancing wasn't necessary for said performance.

And we get Relax. What changed in 9 months that suddenly it was acceptable before the Queen was on?

Kala would hate this episode = no women so far. Apart the debatable thing at the back of the Thompson Twins.
She's now married to the one out of the KLF that isn't Bill Drummond.

Alas I was 3 at the time. It seemed like an exciting pop era to live through.

It was actually an amazing year. I turned 11 in the June and my love of FGTH and The Smiths was of grave concern to my dear mum who, oddly, seemed fine with my Duran Duran phase (The Reflex, New Moon On Monday and The Wild Boys are all absolute fucking bangers). My dad didn't care much apart from hating The Cure and, given that their 1984 offering was "The Caterpillar", a drug-sodden ditty full of out-of-tune violin screeching, it was tricky to argue. Nik Kershaw dropped "The Riddle" which was amazing and I had a shaped picture disc of "Smalltown Boy".

I love Paul Rutherford's dancing. Him and Holly having a gay time in the background was one of the treats of that random Band Aid performance. The Relax climb down is also quite delicious.

We can only hope that the BBC don't go with a triple Ed performance on Xmas TOTP this year.

TOTP2 Xmas 2017 just starting on BBC4. Don't worry, you're only missing The Darkness.

Well that Christmas special with the old Paije Richardson, Lenny Henry, was like the PLAYLIST FROM HELL save for Bronski Beat & Bananarama.

So excited for 1985!

I've COMPLETELY lost track of what I've seen and not now. The Yesterday channel has been showing loads of old episodes as well as BBC4 repeating lots of their 'specials' as well.

I THINK it must’ve been filmed at the same time as that weird one last week with no DJs presenting because FUCKING BLACK LACE are there in the same outfits as when they RUINED the iconic Band Aid performance with Frankie giving zero fucks and Marilyn with his coat on waiting for the taxi.

I nearly deleted it from the planner, assuming it was one of their newer compilation shows.

Not the most thrilling line up I agree. I do like a bit of Dancing With Tears... but the visual of a pained looking Midge Ure with the most ludicrous ponytail takes the shine right off.

Jimmy S was looking rather sweaty, even considering his very enthusiastic arse wiggling.

The first Xmas episode was TERRIBLE. This most recent one is slightly better with at least Chaka Khan, Bananarama, Bronski Beat and Ultravox.

It seems odd that I'd even notice but I swear the Flying Pickets have had a line up change since they were on 12 months prior.

I think there was eventually a version with only one original member, or even none. They formed out of a theatre company or something so as people left, there was a supply of replacements. No-one cared after the teddy boy and the bald bloke quit tho'.

I think I mentioned before that the actor Christopher Ryan (Mike in The Young Ones and Marshall in AbFab) was an original member of The Flying Pickets, but left before they achieved success.

Watching the Xmas Day 1984 episode now. I don't remember seeing this at the time which is odd as it is absolutely in the era when I would have been glued to it.

Bad decision by Howard Jones to sing live. Good decision to have his genetically engineered clone on bass.

Oh Simon Le Bon seems to be live as well...well, not the why-hy-hy-hyy bits obviously..or is he...some bits sound slightly different...anyway, said it above but The Reflex is a cracker.

The Reflex is probably my favourite Duran Duran track. Unlike you, I'm really not fussed with either New Moon On Monday or Wild Boys, though.

The Reflex is obviously a very decent track and Duran Duran definitely had some great HITS, but I can't say I care that much. Better than super bores Spandau Ballet for sure.

I didn't mind a few early Spandau singles, but they went to shit quickly. Duran Duran at least tried to keep it interesting with each album, even if they didn't always succeed.

Duran's initial run of singles before the line-up change is pretty amazing and has aged very well. They just had better songs than Spandau, partly because they had more songwriters in the band.

I like a few Thompson Twins tunes but this isn't one of them.

And as much as Simon Le Bon would never win any vocalist award (well, perhaps the odd Smash Hits one), at least he wasn't Tony Fucking Hadley.

This is a totally different version of "The Power Of Love" - different vocal and everything.

I quite liked Thompson Twins at the time, but don't think they have aged well at all. It all looks (and sometimes sounds) a little cheap and gimmicky.

Yeah, I'd go with that. It's their more sombre moments that have survived...Sister Of Mercy, Kamikaze, Lay Your Hands On Me...

This Lenny Henry episode is a bit rum...it's all the stuff that wasn't good/popular enough for the actual Xmas episode, innit?

God, I wanted to be Keren Woodward so much. Kinda still do...
